Ask Dr. Young and Dr. Higham: Tell us about cavities.

Did you know that cavities are an infectious disease?  Cavities are caused by certain types of bacteria that are usually passed from the primary caregiver to the child.  Sharing food utensils and cleaning a pacifier in your mouth are a few ways cavity causing bacteria are passed along.

Diet habits are one of the major, controllable factors determining dental health.  Infants and toddlers who take bottle or sippy-cup to bed filled with milk, juice or another sweetened beverage can develop severe cavities at a very young age.  Popular snacks and beverages such as chocolate milk and fruit snacks can result in early childhood cavities.  Candy, sugar gum, and soda pop should be special, infrequent treats.  Encourage healthy snacks that won’t cause cavities such as fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and nuts
